Bred by Donna Flanigan, Gibson’s journey began in the sun-kissed pastures of Livermore, California. During our recent phone conversation, Donna fondly recounted Gibson’s early days. The 2020 sorrel stud colt was “all boy,” she recalls with a laugh. “He was quite the character, especially after we sold his half-brother. Once that colt left, Gibson found himself a bit lonely and became quite a study, spirited young horse.” Recognizing his need for companionship, Donna turned to Facebook, seeking a pasture buddy. Morgan was the first to respond, offering her old turnback horse, Rex. “I brought Rex home and turned them out together; Rex gave him one swift kick in the jaw, and the rest was history. They became the best of friends, playing and frolicking around,” Donna remembers with warmth. As time passed with Rex, Gibson matured into a stoic, well-mannered young stallion who knew his place in line. His gentle demeanor symbolized the horse he was destined to be, highlighting the relationships he built along the way.
Gibson’s lineage is equally captivating, rooted in his mother’s legacy, ‘This Kats Kool,’ affectionately known as Lindy. Donna describes Lindy as the most intelligent and sensitive cow horse she’s ever ridden—a true once-in-a-lifetime companion. “She had an incredible aura and was quite eccentric,” Donna shares. “You could feel her presence.” Being a true WR mare, crossing her with Stevie Rey Von was nothing short of perfection, gifting Gibson with the best of both worlds.
As a yearling, Gibson made his way to Morgan’s camp in a fortuitous trade, where Donna exchanged training on her mare for this yearling stud colt. Little did they know how significant this sight-unseen exchange would become. “It has surpassed anything I ever imagined,” Donna reflects. “I thought she might trade or sell him, but for Morgan to want to keep him has been heartwarming. It resonates deeply with everything I’ve strived for as a small breeder.” Her voice softens as she shares her most significant takeaway: “When I sold Gibson, I had no idea how profoundly he would touch the entire Cromer family. Seeing the impact he has made fills my heart with joy.”
Gibson’s journey is a testament to his unmoving character and the experiences that have shaped him into the stallion he is today. From his playful beginnings with Rex to the serendipitous trade that brought him to Morgan’s barn, every moment has contributed to his growth and development. As he continues to succeed, the future holds endless possibilities for this composed young horse. Gibson is not just a product of his lineage; he is family to all who know him—a meaningful reflection of the bonds formed through love, play, and tenacity. With every stride, he is sure to leave his mark on the world, touching the hearts of those fortunate enough to be part of his journey.
